01 Introduction - liquid crystal in everyday life
Every day, we spend hours looking at the screens of smartphones, laptops, televisions, and tablets. Have you ever wondered how images appear on such small screens?

Unlike classroom projectors, these devices do not rely on optical projection. Instead, they use liquid crystals—materials that exist in a unique state between liquids and solids. Liquid crystals combine the fluidity of a liquid with the ordered molecular arrangement of a crystal, allowing them to manipulate light in response to an electric field. This remarkable property forms the basis of modern liquid crystal displays (LCDs). Beyond electronic displays, liquid crystals are also used in optical sensors, medical devices, and advanced photonic technologies.
02 Why - How Liquid Crystals Work
The ability of liquid crystals to control light arises from their rod-shaped molecular structure, which gives them both optical anisotropy and dielectric anisotropy. Because the refractive index differs along and across the molecular axis, polarized light travels at different speeds depending on its direction, causing its polarization to rotate as it passes through the liquid crystal layer.

liquid crystal polarization effect
Many liquid crystal molecules also contain polar functional groups, such as nitrile (–CN) or ester (–COO–), which create permanent electric dipoles. When an electric field is applied, these dipoles experience a torque that realigns the molecules with the field. This change in orientation alters how the liquid crystal rotates polarized light. Placed between two crossed polarizing filters, the liquid crystal either allows light to pass or blocks it. By varying the applied voltage, each pixel can produce different brightness levels and colours, forming the images displayed on an LCD screen.
03 How - Synthesis of liquid crystal
Liquid crystals are synthesized through organic chemical reactions rather than extracted from natural sources. A rigid aromatic core, commonly based on benzene or biphenyl rings, is first constructed through coupling and substitution reactions. Flexible alkyl or alkoxy chains are then attached to provide fluidity while preserving molecular alignment. Functional linking groups, such as esters or ethers, are introduced to fine-tune properties including melting point, viscosity, and the temperature range over which the liquid crystal phase exists.

The resulting compounds are purified by recrystallization or chromatography and characterized using techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry (MS). Their liquid crystal behaviour is then confirmed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). In commercial LCDs, carefully formulated mixtures of several liquid crystal compounds are used to achieve rapid response times, stable operation over a wide temperature range, and high optical performance.
04 Conclusion
Liquid crystals demonstrate how molecular structure can determine material properties and technological applications. Their unique combination of ordered molecular alignment and fluidity enables precise control of light through electric fields, making high-resolution electronic displays possible. At the same time, advances in organic synthesis allow scientists to tailor liquid crystal molecules for specific optical and thermal properties. As research continues, liquid crystals remain essential not only in consumer electronics but also in emerging fields such as flexible displays, photonics, and biomedical sensing, highlighting the close relationship between chemistry and modern technology.
In the end, I want to recommend Edward Elgar‘s Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85 (1st movement)

This piece feels like a “cooling” liquid crystal: introspective, fragile, and continuously shifting between emotional states. The structure is clear, but the surface is highly sensitive-phrases bend and reorient like molecules responding to slight external fields, especially in the transitions between melancholy and warmth.
